Big Trout and Scones
Members of the group: Bjørn Enge, Jonas Enge,Tore Nuvin, Ole Petter Dahl, Kjell Kristiansen and Kjell Sømme.
Big Trout, Kharlovka was the first destination for this group. We tried different places the first night and we all experienced some hatches and had some fish. The weather was warm and the temperature in the river was 17 degrees. From there on the temperature rose both in the air and water. In the air we had some 35 degrees or more and in the water we measured 22 degrees. The insect activity in the river declined and we had some difficult fishing. The night was definitely the most rewarding time to fish since we all liked to fish dry flies. Getting a good night sleep was difficult with the sun constantly shining. The group still got some nice fish at Big Trout, but the big ones cruised the pool downstream from the rapids some 40-50 meters away.
Arriving at Scones we prayed for more normal tundra weather. But the heat went on. Still we had some good fishing both upstream and downstream. Three members of the group had their first trip to Kola and they all managed to catch fish above 2 kg, two even passed 3 kg. Even though we experienced some really hot weather with scarce hatching, we caught in all some 55 fish. 4 above 3 kg! Kjell K. took two on 3.3 kg. Most fish were taken on caddis imitations and all on dry flies! All members of the group were satisfied with this week on the tundra and are just waiting to return. Thanks to Gena who was an excellent cook and served us meals at night and day!
