Dream Litza and Big Trout Kharlovka

Back from another fantastic trip on the Russian tundra with a group of Tundra veterans. We had all prepared well during winter and thought we would know exactly what to expect. But ‘Tundra is Tundra’ and anything can happen☺

Our group consisted of from left: Eivind Hagen (group leader), Igor (Chief Camp Officer), Nor Bjørlykke, Per Klaesson, Espen Klaesson and Helge Olsen:

We started in Dream Litza and arrived to near perfect conditions with 11 degrees in the water, 15 degrees in the air, a bit cloudy with light northern wind and a little bit low water level.
We were pleasantly surprised to find no mosquitos. Also usually at this time of the year, it should have been many cloudberries, but we saw nothing. Apparently, summer still had not arrived at the Tundra.

We could not wait to start exploring and rigged camp and rods in a hurry. That evening we had good fishing, highlights were Per who got 6 trout’s before dinner and Helge who caught a nice 3,1 kilo trout.
Nor caught a nice Litza trout:

Upper part of Dream Litza were a bit shallow and didn’t hold large trout’s due to the water level, but most of the tails from the middle part and down towards the Pina junction held large trouts and all in all good fishing. Espen took the largest one in Litza weighing in at 4,1 kilo.

On Tuesday we were picked up and went to Big Trout, a camp I had been to many times before and usually hold large trout. We were all exciting to see the upper Kharlovka again; the water level was perfect and 12 degrees in the water. Per had a great start catching a 3,6 kilo trout on a #12 CDC caddis. This paved the way forward for utterly optimism on catching more trophy trout’s in Kharlovka.

Great to arrive camp after a long day fishing:

On Thursday summer arrived on the Tundra! We got 25 degrees and sunshine, mosquitos started to fly in over us, and we got some scattered mayfly and caddis hatches. The fish became a bit more active again.

We had some amazing sunsets over Kharlovka:

Me with a nice Kharlovka trout:

The last couple of evenings in Big Trout we got some scattered caddis hatches in one of the pools downstream camp. Dead drift swimming pupa’s size 14 did the trick. Here is Helge with a nice Kharlovka trout caught on size 14 superpuppa:

We did not get a large number of trout’s this year (56 in total), but we got many trophy trout’s. 8 of the trout’s were more than 3 kilo and the largest being 4,1 kilo. The Top 3 flies which worked best for us this year was CDC caddis, Superpuppa and ‘Suck on This’.

Our good friend Igor orchestrated the camp in an excellent manner making the camp life both enjoyable and comfortable for all of us. Moreover, the Tundra food Igor made this year was better than ever and we all looked forward to each delicious meal☺

Can’t wait to next time!
