Kharlovka News Update: Saturday, 19-Aug-06

We are now up 33% over last year for the season to date. So far this year our three largest fish landed have been at 50+ (125 cm), 43, 41 lbs. and we are expecting more magnificent fish in this range. We have landed 31 over 30 lbs, 189 over 20 lbs and 413 over 15 lbs.

Over the last four weeks, starting 22-Jul-06, we have had superb late summer and early autumn fishing. The total catch for this period has been 68% up on last year and 70% of the fish have been fresh. Even last week the fresh fish were 51% of the total caught.

The nights are drawing in and it is now dark well before midnight. Over the last two weeks it has been relatively cool and the water temperature has ranged between 8C and 12C. The water level is getting rather low and we need the usual late August rains to maintain these brilliant fishing results. The tundra is starting to take on its red autumn hue and the Russians are out picking mushrooms and berries in their spare time. For some of us it is the favourite time of the year. Shortly the water will start to fall below 8C and the residents will become more aggressive. Before we go home large sea-liced fresh "Osenka" will suddenly appear to give us an exciting end to this great season.

Kharlovka News Update: Saturday, 5-Aug-06

I very much regret that it became necessary to suspend the "Kharlovka Report". I would like to thank the huge number of friends who have sent messages expressing interest and concern.

On current performance I think we are heading for a record year. The season started much later than usual. Lower water temperatures with higher water levels than normal have been sustained.

The Kharlovka & Eastern Litza catch returns have been excellent. The total result for this season for both rivers is 34% above this time last year and 17.9% above the five year average. The average number of fish landed in the last two weeks was 67% up on the five year average. Amazingly, 69% of these were fresh indicating the possibility of great August fishing.

We believe we have landed the first 50 pounder. It measured 125 cm, was hooked in Reindeer and landed in Snow Bank. Sadly, without complete authentication, it cannot go down as the record which stands at 47.5 lbs.

The average weight of the 50 best salmon has been 31.2 lbs. The 12 best great fish are recorded as 50?, 43, 39, 37, 37, 37, 36, 36, 35, 35, 35 & 35. One of the 35 lb fish was caught & released at Kharlovka Falls by an eleven-year-old boy who himself weighs only 40 lbs. He was with us under the ASR Youth Programme, accompanied by his proud father, but he achieved this feat entirely on his own.

This season is the 7th year into our 11 year $1.65M salmon conservation and tundra protection programme. We are starting to see some really positive results. For example this season there has been an increase in grilse to 29.1% of the total catch. The most exciting result is that the parr count has quadrupled. As most of you know, the life of the salmon is 4-7 years in the river and up to 4 years in the sea.

By general acclaim the improvements to the Club Room, cooking and general service have been an outstanding success. In my nine summers living in the tundra I have never witnessed a better atmosphere between guests and staff alike. It has been a season of great happiness all around.

During the course of August I will be inviting you to consider returning to the ASR in 2007 by sending out the usual "Reservation Application".
