Trout Fishing Report 8A – 2017

“Just came back home from my best ever trip on the Tundra. I have been there 10 years now but this year trip was beating all my (and my group members) expectations. I could just have showed some pictures in this report because they tell more than a thousand words, but hear out the executive summary first: i. Biggest trout 5.3 kilo! ii. We got 6 fish over 4 kilo! iii. All group members got a + 4 kilo trophy trout! iv. We got 19 fish over 3 kilo! v. 4 out of 5 members...

Trout Fishing Report 6B – 2017

A few weeks are gone since we returned from our trip. Just today I was packing the last stuff away, also my day pack. Opened it in order to check if all things are taken out, but no…there is one small, but clear hint where we have been (I’m sure everybody who has had the privilege of fishing the Kharlovka and Litza headwaters has enjoyed fair amounts of these bars)… No doubt – the Russian tundra of the ASR has seen us again ☺ So in 2017 we planned to...

Trout Fishing Report 5B – 2017

Running and Big Trout The spring came late to the Russian tundra this year, due to the extreme amounts of snow. Knowing that the water level was falling and the good fishing had just started – we aimed for Running with great expectations. With a mixed group of people we had everyting a group could wish for: 22 weeks with Kola experience, tons of flyfishing experience, young courage, and plenty of engeneering analytics and tactics. The group was from top left: Tore (70...

Trout Fishing Report 4A – 2017

I have again had the pleasure of visiting the Kharlovka river for a week with good friends. This year my group consisted of Kola veterans that have been travelling with me several times before. The group this year was 5 people (we had one shortfall) from left front; Glenn Christensen, Øyvind Dahl, Tom Tuskin (group leader), Tommy Lafton, Luganscky Volodya (tundra Chef) and Trond Bentestuen. We had for this year made own logo and new jackets for the trip. We had been...

Trout Fishing Report 5A – 2017

by Alf M Sollund Once again a dream week at Dream Kharlovka during week 29 (15th – 22nd of July 2017). Five fly fishermen caught 92 trout larger than 1 kg topping with 4,8 (estimated from measurements) and 4,5 kg. Again our warmest thanks to Mr. Kola, our guide Luganscky Volodya and the rest at Kharlovka Company. The group (from left): Luganscky Volodya (Russia, our guide), Frank Pedersen (Norway), Stian Jacobsen (Norway), Thor Evensen (Norway), Steinar Simonsen (Norway –...

Trout Fishing Report 3B – 2017

Swan Islands Our group consisted of from left: Håvard Martinussen, Vasillijev, Jan Erik Lund, Kjetil Hvarnes(Group leader), Torleiv Grøndalen, Stian Wadahl The toughest conditions we have ever tried to fish in, sums up this year’s trip. The weather was nice with both heat, rain and a little cold. The company of the invincible gang of fly fishers was extraordinary this year. However, the fact that spring was late and snow still melting after record amount of snow this year...

Kharlovka week 28 ending 14th of July 2017

New record on the mighty Kharlovka with 337 salmon for 13 rods! Although things started off a bit slow with only 4 salmon recorded in the book on the first day, everything quickly came just right for this returning group of good friends who went on to enjoy some fantastic fishing that won’t soon be forgotten. The conditions were almost perfect with the rivers slowly dropping away about 4cm/day finishing off the week with a good level of 45cm on the home pool scale...

Rynda week 28 ending 14th of July 2017

Perfect time! This is the headline for this week at the Rynda river. Rynda guests were successfully using the full spectrum of fishing tactics from sinking, intermediate and floating lines along with tubes, doubles, singles and hitched flies! Rynda was developing nicely, during the week the water level dropped up to 32 cm and water temp moved from 11C to 14C. Salmon run responded to the water dropping immediately. If in the beginning of the week most of the salmon were...

Rynda week 27 ending 7th of July 2017

Last week was a start of the summer here in tundra. Water level dropped 30 cm during the week. The week started with unbelievably low water temp of 4C and by the end of the week the water temp reached 10C! Along with the water level dropping this fact changed fishing in a big way. Our anglers started to put away their sinking lines and switched to intermediates and even floating lines. Last week at Rynda three different generations fished together – from veterans to...

Kharlovka week 27 ending 7th of July 2017

Summer like conditions finally arrived to the far northern tundra along with plenty of sun and warming rivers last week that went from 7.6C up to 13C – while water levels dropped away nicely at about 6cm/day to finish the week at 76cm on the home pool scale. The combination of the rivers warming and the levels dropping led to some fantastic fishing results for the lucky group of 12 international guests. Following introductions and group bonding the boys were obviously...

Kharlovka week 26 ending friday 30th of June 2017

Notice from the authorities of a late decision to conduct naval exercises off the controlled zone within which we operate, necessitated some last minute changes to the teams of guests at ASR last week. Whilst our overseas friends for this specific week only therefore had to postpone their week’s fishing in 2017 until a little later in the season, our many friends who have less restricted access were able to join camp and enjoyed some improving fishing. Nevertheless, our new...

Rynda week 25 ending 23th of June 2017

We had a challenging week with big rising water and cold conditions. It was a bit like fishing in Gin&Tonic water under icy rain! The Rynda River reached its peak and then stayed at this huge level whole week. This along with cold (1.5C) water temps kept most of the salmon down at the lower Sea pool. Such extreme river condition required heavy sinking lines and even some big brass tubes – Snaeldas, Willy Guns, Temple Dogs were also affective patterns. The fishing...

Kharlovka week 25 ending Friday 23 June 2017

With water levels peaking back on their opening day at a massive 149cm which is about a meter higher than normal for this time of year, the group stared out the windows in amazement at the swollen rivers below and pondered their chances upon arrival -’like finding a needle in a haystack’. Thankfully – while there must have been a few monsters swimming up the thick currents in the middle, there turned out to be plenty of big silver lining the banks of the...

Kharlovka week 24 ending Friday 16 June 2017

Looking back we can say that the cold conditions through the end of May has delayed the big spring thaw on the north coast by about 2-3 weeks this season. With rising water levels and plenty of snow – ice still along the banks, we decided early on to limit last week’s group of fishing warriors to 8 guests with 6 veteran guides to lead the way. This was the first trip to the ASR for the majoirity of our guests. Water levels during the week went from a challenging...

Rynda week 24 ending 16th of June 2017

Late and cold spring finally exploded! As a result, during the week Rynda was rising in a big way adding 10-16 cm to the water measuring stick every day. And by the end of the week river almost reached the peak. High water reduced our fishing places. Most of them are too heavy now. Nevertheless, we have to pass this flood and gradually get back to normal. Fishing wise, in the given conditions our anglers did very well! Here are some highlights we would like to share with...

Rynda week 23 ending 9th of June 2017

This was the first week of the season 2017. The short description leading up to our opening week could be ‘Record amounts of snow along with a very-very late spring’. Snow levels along the northern coast topped an 80-year high last winter. This in addition to the late arrival of spring with the low air temperatures for most of May has produced low water conditions and huge snow banks to start the season. Nevertheless this certainly was not a barrier for the 6 crazy spring...
