Kharlovka Fishing Week 36 – 2012

Kharlovka Report – Final week of the season ending 8th September. Over the last two weeks, time has slowed to a tranquil pace here above the Arctic Circle as the long white nights of summer have been replaced with thousands of stars and curtains of dancing green lights. Along with all those cherished mushrooms and tasty blue berries, there were also a lot of large aggressive salmon about! The Russians call this brief magical period ‘Zolotaya Osen’ or golden autumn as...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 35 – 2012

Three Rivers Programme – Kharlovka, Litza & Rynda Rivers – Kola Peninsula, Russia . WhereWiseMenFish Hosted Week – 25 August – 1 Sept 2012 I am sure I am not alone in saying that the quest for big fish is for many fishermen a mix between addiction and obsession. If you fall into either category then a week on the Atlantic Salmon Reserve may well be the drug that drives this lust to new lengths. Concerned… you should be for this week; the first of...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 32 – 2012

Although it is true, that every week is special here on the Northern Rivers, last week was one that none of us will soon forget! Ever heard of the Loop Army? Well, we were all quite honored last week when their new fishing generals decided to helicopter into the Kharlovka camp to conduct their big board meeting! (photos by Justin and Dmitry) From those original breathable waders, to the large arbor loop reels, to their new and improved snappy Cross rods – there are...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 31 – 2012

Looking back to those last memorable days of July, we were pleased to have a small cozy group that consisted of a couple of old friends and a couple more new amigos. Although we were expecting eight eager anglers to show up that week, only half the lucky group ended up jumping off the helicopter ready for action. The other 4 seemed to be too busy or unfortunate to join the party and elected to stay home with recent job promotions, bad backs, and an most unfortunate last...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 30 – 2012

It has certainly been a magical ride this summer here on the Northern Rivers! Following several weeks of exciting shifts in the weather, including those epic rains to end the week before, the conditions seemed to have calmed back down now and it has been smooth sailing ever since. Fishing under mostly sunny skies with pleasant temperatures ranging from 13 to 25 degrees (and barely a single mozy to be seen), last week’s small, but lucky, team of three old English...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 29 – 2012

While the vast majority of the staff have been claiming the Kharlovka camp as their ‘home’ for more than 15 years now and might have thought that they had pretty much seen it all before, last week reminded us again just how extreme Mother Nature can be when you come to live and play along the far northern coast. We started out the week searching for our oils and sprays again with bright sunny skies and the temperatures soaring to 30 degrees in the shade. With...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 28 – 2012

With the exception of that one afternoon when the skies suddenly turned dark and the fog rolled in off the sea making it very difficult to even see downstream let alone attempt to cast a fly, all in all, it was actually a very pleasant mid summer’s week of mild temperatures ranging from 7 to 15 degrees and partly cloudy skies. Obviously it must have been a few degrees warmer farther upstream on the tundra as the temperature of the rivers remained steady through the...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 27 – 2012

Although the weather and the water levels have been all over the place so far this season, last week the conditions were mostly bright and warm with a bit of wind and rain to freshen things up half way through the week. We started off with lots of bright sun and precious few scattered clouds about, with warm temperatures of 20+ degrees C as the rivers slowly warmed to a midweek high of 17 C on the home pool scale. After a bit of welcomed precipitation on Tuesday that was...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 26 – 2012

At these sort of northern latitudes one should expect a bit of veritable weather over the course of the week however we have been battling extreme shifts in the conditions for the last fortnight. Last week’s gang of 14 old friends and new faces arrived to low cool rivers, blazing sunny skies, warm southern breezes and pleasant temperatures of 25 degrees C. Without a cloud in the sky, this is how it would remain until Tuesday when the barometer finally started to drop...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 25 – 2012

Although the signs of summer have been with us from the very beginning this season, last week the weather conditions flipped around reminding us all again of our remote northern location some 300km above the arctic circle. After finishing up the previous week with scorching hots temps of 30 degrees C, we were fortunate to get the latest Kharlovka guests into camp just before the winds switched around and the temperatures started to plummet. Vladimir Jr. with a nice 15...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 24 – 2012

Yes it is true, summer has definitely arrived to the northern tundra! Tall green grass now blankets the lush birch forests. The little brown birds can be heard singing and are returning to their nests with mouthfuls of caddis and mayflies. Even many of the flowers are already in full bloom. However despite the advanced summer conditions, blazing sun, and low water conditions, the big salmon continue to arrive. Half of last week’s jolly Kharlovka team was made up of...

Kharlovka Fishing Week 23 – 2012

You have to go all the way back to the 2005 season on the mighty Kharlovka camp when we recorded more large salmon on the first week of June. Although we did not manage to beat our old record of 130, nobody was complaining last week with a final result of 95 wonderful spring salmon. Especially considering that 39% of the salmon landed were larger than 20 pounds. Everyone in the group had at least one 20+ pounder to go home and brag about. In addition to that, there were 5...
